5 TIPS YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN

Introduction

Sensitive skin is one of the most common skin concerns out there, and many of us will struggle with skin sensitivity at some point in our lives. Even if dry skin has never been something you’ve experienced, as we age, the skin's oil and cell production slow down, making the likelihood of experiencing some sort of skin sensitivity much more likely. Making the transition from naturally immaculate skin to coping with sensitive skin is not simple, but don’t fret, the right skincare products and a few tips can help you navigate this process.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is defined as the skin's inability to withstand harsh conditions, chemicals, environments, or even specific diets. Additionally to aging, the cooler weather, humidity, and stress are all factors that can contribute to skin's sensitivity. Moreover, food sensitivities such as lactose or gluten intolerance have been known to worsen skin issues and contribute to skin sensitivity.

Sensitive skin is not a medical diagnosis, rather a widespread problem. Some of it is just inherited, so you may have more sensitive skin than others due to your genetics and the way your lipid barrier is constructed. Sensitive skin simply means that your skin is more sensitive than the norm.

If you have ever had trouble with sensitive skin that is prone to redness, irritation, and inflammation; fortunately, I have 5 tips that together will improve the look and feel of your sensitive skin.

5 tips for sensitive skin

        1. The first tip, endorsed by most dermatologists, is to not over-wash, over-exfoliate, or over-treat your sensitive skin. In this regard, you should try to avoid harsh skincare products containing:
  • Antibacterial or deodorant ingredients
  • Alcohol
  • Retinoids or alpha-hydroxy acids
Indeed, you should always opt for skincare products with natural ingredients.
I would recommend you to follow minimalistic skincare. You can read more about the benefits of minimalistic skincare routines in our latest blog post!
2. Get to know your skin and find your triggers! There are different degrees and reasons for skin sensitivity. Your best chance for determining your trigger is to consult a dermatologist. Yet, you should avoid overly refined skincare products that may be too harsh on your skin, such as strong chemical cleaners. Soaps, detergents, colors, and scents in topical treatments tend to irritate those with sensitive skin and using the wrong ones can result in itchiness, dryness, and reddening. I recommend that you carefully read the ingredients of a product to ensure that they are natural and that you are not sensitive/allergic to any of them.
3. Although we all fancy a long hot shower, when washing your sensitive skin it is best to use lukewarm/cooler water and limit longer showers. Humidity is bad for your dry skin and it can worsen your skin situation by making it even drier.
4. Other potential skin triggers can include hormones, lack of sleep, UV radiation, and even air pollution. In this regard, you should never forget to wear sunscreen year-round and defend your skin from pollutants. I thus advise you to read our previous blog “Face the City” on how to defend your skin from pollutants and UV radiation with Chatelier’s Pure Cell Protection. This miracle serum contains natural ingredients that are exactly what you need to repair your skin overnight, and prepare you to face the city the following day.
5. If your skin's lipid barrier is weak, it's also simpler for moisture to leave, so don't forget to moisturize! I can't emphasize this enough: moisturizing is a must if you want to avoid dry skin that irritates you even more. Emollients and humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid frequently go hand in hand with sensitivity because they preserve moisture and repair the lipid barrier. Considering it is essential to carefully choose a moisturizer that replenishes your skin, yet without making it oily; I would using a gentle moisturizer such as Chatelier’s Creme Vitale. Creme Vitale is a 100% natural ultra-light day cream that dissolves into your skin's top layer, replenishing moisture and providing your skin with a strong natural barrier to protect it from environmental aggressors including weather, pollution, and bacteria.

To sum up

By following these 5 tips you will begin to notice fewer breakouts and brighter softer skin; something I can personally attest to. Adding Chatelier products into my daily skincare routine has made me feel my most radiant, and I couldn’t be happier with the healthy glow I am noticing. Add these 5 tips to your skincare routine and say goodbye to sensitive skin, your skin will thank you!
